The town-centre with its beautiful attractions, surrounded by a green promenade circle, is the lively, historical heart of Leipzig. Famous people like Goethe-who called the city 'Little-Paris' and Leipzig's long time city music director Johann Sebastian Bach enjoyed to staying here. Today, Leipzig is recognized as one of the most dynamic cities in Europe which has a large choice of classical music, satirical cabarets and small theatres.

Sights & Attractions
The MONUMENT OF THE BATTLE OF LEIZIG is considered the best-known symbol of the city whilst the oldest and largest church of the town is the beautiful SANKT NIKOLAI church. One of Germany's most beautiful Renaissance buildings is the OLD TOWN HALL, which is today used as a MUSEUM OF CITY HISTORY. Also beautiful to see is the NEW TOWN HALL, with it's richly decorated facades.

Further attractions are the historical AUERBACH KELLER, which lies in the MAEDLER PASSAGE, Leipzig's most beautiful arcade, and is well-known as scenery from Goethe's 'Faust', and the MORITZBASTEI, which is the first point of visit for a nostalgic night-life visit. Leipzig's international reputation as a city of music is closely associated with the GEWANDHAUS, with Germany's oldest civil orchestra, and the LEIPZIG OPERA, which received the European 'Opera House of the Year' award in 1993 and 1995.

Surrounding Highlights
The Harz, a beautiful mountain range around 1000 metres high, lies to the west of Leipzig. Next to the Harz is Quedlinburg, an old romantic town. To the north of Leipzig lies Magdeburg, where 25th National Garden & Flower Show takes place from April until October. Weimar,the city of classic literary works to the south, will be the European City of Culture 1999.
